This week on Jada Pinkett Smith's show on the Facebook Watch series, Red Table Talk, the trio got Toni Braxton to pull up a chair and talk about some of her bidness. They were joined by Jada's mothe,r Adrienne Banfield-Jones, and her daughter, Willow, to converse about topics addressing issues that affect women.
Monday's episode featured discussions of pain of divorce. Braxton is currently engaged to Cash Money Records co-owner, Birdman. Long before they found each other, the singer married 5 years ago, creating 2 children. Jada starts the episode with a voice over saying "divorce touches everyone." She continues to say "my own mother has been divorced 3 times. I met Will as he was splitting from his first wife Sheree." She sets up the cue for Toni Braxton to begin sharing her experience.
Braxton and her husband of 12 years, Keri Lewis ended their marriage in 2013. She talks about how she hated being divorced and what her relationship to Keri became after they split up. Braxton said “My husband became my boyfriend and we were attempting to salvage the relationship again, we were hopeful. We dated for a good year and a half, almost 2 years after we got a divorce. I know it sounds crazy, right?” Braxton continued to open up about her regrets in her marriage, why the couple broke up, paying her ex-husband alimony, her own struggles with her illness, Lupus and how that weighted on her relationship.
“I felt shallow because my ex-husband and I broke up for money issues. I found out I had Lupus at the time, I couldn’t make money because I had Lupus, I had to cancel the show.
"That was my personal contribution to the marriage failing, because who wants to take care of a person who’s sick all the time?”
The women listened while Braxton shared that she harbored some unpleasant feelings about herself because she was sick that spilled over into how she began to think Lewis felt about her. He never made comments about taking care of her after finding out about her condition but Braxton had convinced herself that Keri left because she was ill.
