Jordan Peele Tags Director Nia DeCosta for 'Candyman' Sequel

According to Shadow and Act, Comedian on Key & Peele and Oscar winning Director of Get Out is booked to create a sequel to the 1992 thriller Candyman.

The sequel is scheduled to release in June 12, 2020. The film takes place in a currently gentrified neighborhood in Chicago where the Cabrini-Green housing projects once stood.

Peele sought out Nia DaCosta to direct the movie. DaCosta is known for her feature debut this year with Little Woods starring Tessa Thompson and Lily James.

Jordan Peele dropped a statement regarding the original film Candyman, he says, “The original was a landmark film for Black representation in the horror genre. Alongside Night of the Living Dead, Candyman was a major inspiration for me as a filmmaker — and to have a bold new talent like Nia at the helm of this project is truly exciting. We are honored to bring the next chapter in the ‘Candyman’ canon to life and eager to provide new audiences with an entry point to Clive Barker’s legend.”

Peele is co-writing on the project and producing the sequel through MonkeyPaw Productions.
